TeachingWell in 2025: A four-part refresher on the principles of teaching and assessment (PLS)
Join Dr Gayle Morris and explore the fundamentals of teaching practice and designing learning and assessment tasks.
This series is designed to kickstart your academic year, aligning with the CORE TeachWell Framework’s Teach, Design and Assess domains. Ideal for new teachers or those wishing to revisit fundamentals for a successful semester. These are intended to be practical and colleagues are encouraged to bring along any current courses, including learning activities, assessments, etc., that they may wish to work on.

Principles of learning and teaching
This session provides insight into what we know about how students learn and then looks to explore how these learning principles can be applied in the classroom.

This session introduces the principles of good course design and strategies to support a well-structured lesson and course.

Strategies for facilitating active learning
This session introduces key concepts, principles, and practices to support active learning, including integrating technology to support active learning.

Principles of assessment design and effective feedback
This session introduces key principles in contemporary assessment design but with an emphasis on the different ways we can provide feedback to support student learning.

Dr Gayle Morris
Director Learning and Teaching
Gayle is currently the University Director of Learning and Teaching, Office of the Vice Chancellor, at The University of Auckland, and is responsible for the professional learning of new and experienced teachers, and in leading institutional changes in teaching and learning. Gayle has over 25 years experience in higher education in Australia, Hong Kong and New Zealand. Previously she was Professor and Pro Vice Chancellor Learning and Teaching at Auckland University of Technology, and Director of Academic Programs with the Centre for Enhancement of Teaching and Learning at The University of Hong Kong. She brings a depth of expertise in adult learning, with a PhD in Adult Learning, a Masters of Education, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Adult Learning ,and a Diploma in Digital and Collaborative Learning.
As a keen learner herself, Gayle has completed the Stanford D School Design Thinking program, and Executive Leadership through the Graduate School of Business, also at Stanford University. She has wide sector knowledge through her previous role as Executive Member of the Council of Australasian Leaders of Learning and Teaching, and Australasian Business Deans Council, Teaching and Learning Network. Gayle is a passionate educator known for her engaging facilitation style and her ability to make learning enjoyable.
