Summative Evaluation Tool (SET)

SET (Summative Evaluation Tool) is the University’s online course and teaching student evaluation system.

SET is the University’s centrally-implemented system for summative, online, student course and teaching evaluation. It is designed to facilitate student feedback on learning and teaching for students, teachers and academic managers. Please remind your students to fill out SET evaluations. Check your inbox for SET-related messages.

SET is managed and coordinated by the Academic Quality Office (AQO).

Make sure that all SET-eligible staff have the Teacher role in Canvas. Only those with the Teacher role will receive SET scores.

Course directors should have both Teacher and Course Director roles in Canvas. Any non-teaching staff should have Teaching Assistant, Teaching Support, or other roles. If you are unable to do this yourself, ask your .

Make sure the Course Director role in Campus Solutions Nine (CS9) is up to date. To do so, view a full list of current SET-eligible courses and teaching staff via the (University staff only).

The AQO sends a notification to Deans, Associate Deans, HoDs, Course Directors and Teachers, one week in advance of SET evaluations, that the courses you teach will be evaluated in SET.

Ensure that SET menu items are enabled and visible in the Course menu. Content under 'SET Evaluations' will be visible to students and content under 'SET Reports' will be visible to staff. Staff will not see the submitted evaluations under the ‘SET Evaluations’ menu.

Make an announcement in Canvas for your students. See SET Course Evaluations Announcement Text.

Schedule some in-class time for students to complete the evaluation and prepare a QR code to share with them.

After evaluations close

After the evaluation period

  • You will receive individual SET reports within 2 – 5 days after the evaluations close.
  • You should close the loop to students and provide feedback on SET results to the current cohort of students through Canvas. See: Closing the Loop Feedback Template.
  • Update the course’s Digital Course Outlines (DCO) to reflect the feedback and any changes you have implemented for your course.

Courses ineligible for SET

For courses ineligible for SET (e.g., due to a class size of less than 10, or courses requested to be excluded from SET), please use other methods of attaining feedback. For example, set up a Qualtrics evaluation before the course’s final assessment period.

Please view this guide how to use Qualtrics.

Currently there is no requirement to send a summary of Qualtrics surveys to AQO.

To note

SET is one component towards fulfilling the requirements of the Enhancement and Evaluation of Courses and Teaching Policy and Procedures. For details, visit: Guidelines for the enhancement and evaluation courses and teaching.
