Panopto video assignments
The following guide is for both teachers and students.
Panopto is integrated with Canvas, enabling students to upload their video directly from the Canvas assignment page. The following describes the steps for a teacher to create a Canvas video assignment, and for students to upload their file. The benefits are:
- Marking with SpeedGrader
- Panopto has more file storage than Canvas’ course storage limit
- Eliminates video playback problems that may arise from incompatible file formats
- No need for teachers to create an assignment folder in Panopto in advance
- Students don’t have to upload it to their personal folder (e.g., ‘My Folder’) in Panopto first before moving it to the course assignment folder.
Note: Panopto’s built-in video editing feature is not available via this method, therefore, students should edit the video in advance of submitting the assignment using their choice of video editing software.
Teachers: Create an assignment
Panopto integration is through Canvas’ Rich Text Editor, therefore, we will create a ‘text entry’ assignment.
- In your Canvas course, navigate to ‘Assignments‘.
- Click ‘+ Assignment‘ button.
- Name the assignment and select ‘Online‘ submission.
- Tick ‘Text entry‘.
- Decide whether to allow multiple submissions via the ‘Allowed attempts‘ option.
- Complete the assignment settings as usual and click ‘Save‘, or ‘Save and Publish‘.
Teachers can track all uploaded videos via the Panopto Video menu in their Canvas course.
- Navigate to ‘Panopto Video‘ in the course menu.
- Select the ‘course folder‘.
- Select the ‘Student Submissions‘ folder. All uploaded videos will be listed.
If students navigate to the same location, they will only be able to see their own.
Teachers will be able to grade assignment submissions using SpeedGrader. If a student resubmitted an assignment, SpeedGrader will display their latest attempt. However, if they wish, teachers can view any previous attempts via a drop-down list.
Students: Submit an assignment
Students should navigate to the Assignment section of the course and open the video assignment.
- Press ‘Start Assignment‘ button.
- Click the three ‘vertical dots‘ on the Rich Text Editor’s toolbar to show more icons.
- Click the ‘Panopto icon‘. This will either be visible in the toolbar or nested within the plug icon.
- Click the ‘Upload‘ tab and locate the video file on your computer to upload it.
- The video will upload to the text area. Add a comment if you wish then click ‘Submit assignment‘.
- Students can check their video via the ‘Submission details‘ link.
- If required, resubmit the assignment (though this setting may have been disabled).
Subsequent submissions will display the latest uploaded video. This is the submission that will be graded.
Students: Record a screencast or webcam
This step compliments the instructions above and is useful for students to record themselves presenting, e.g., a viva voce.
- Instead of selecting the ‘Upload’ tab in Panopto, select the ‘Record‘ tab.
- Click the ‘Launch Capture‘ button to open Panopto’s browser-based video capture software.
Panopto’s recording app will open in the browser where you can choose to record the webcam and/or a screen recording. When you have finished it will ask if you want to upload the recording to the assignment.
