Supervision: Supporting EAL candidates with their academic English development

The School of Graduate Studies facilitates workshops for research supervisors at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland.

Many doctoral candidates who speak English as an additional language (EAL) experience challenges with oral and written communication in meeting their doctoral milestones, especially in their first year of enrolment. These challenges are often intensified for candidates who have come from a different background and have recently arrived in New Zealand.

This interactive workshop is facilitated by English Language Enrichment. The team members will provide guidance and practical advice on:

  • Challenges faced by candidates as they seek to study through English in a NZ academic environment
  • How to address the challenges candidates experience in writing academic English
  • How to facilitate the development of candidates’ oral communication skills
  • Where to direct candidates for academic and language advice
