From Text to Talking Head: A Demo of HeyGen in Action

Speaker: Guy Bate (Thematic Lead in AI, UABS)

Guy is exploring the use of multimodal AI tools to support innovation in teaching and learning. In this demo, he will introduce HeyGen, an AI video platform that enables fast, high-quality creation of presenter-style videos from text. The session will show how HeyGen might be used to generate explainer videos, student-facing personas, and multilingual content. Participants will leave with a better sense of what the platform can do and how it might be explored further in their own teaching or support contexts.

Teaching with Google Gemini and NotebookLM: AI tools for metacognition and literacy

Speaker: Karl McGuirk (Senior Digital Learning Lead, Ranga Auaha Ako, Learning and Teaching Design Team)

Karl supports digital learning strategy and staff development across the university, with a focus on inclusive, pedagogically grounded use of educational technologies. In this demo, he will introduce Google Gemini and NotebookLM, enterprise-supported AI tools with built-in data protection, freely available to staff and students. The session will explore how these tools can support metacognitive learning, AI literacy and formative feedback, offering practical ideas for teaching applications grounded in learning science.
