Supervision: Communication and feedback for research supervisors

The School of Graduate Studies facilitates workshops for research supervisors at Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland.

Many research students cite getting and dealing with supervisor feedback as one of the most frustrating areas of candidature. Feedback is essential to help the candidate progress in their research and improve the quality of their outputs.

We will explore feedback from all angles and a range of perspectives:

  • Different types of feedback, including varying the feedback
  • Innovative feedback formats
  • How to provide criticism
  • What to do when the writing is bad
  • Deciding whether to assess a few pages or a chapter and turnaround time
  • What to do when candidates don’t listen to your feedback

You will gain practice advice about what you can do as a supervisor to ensure candidates get the necessary feedback.
